Paperwork: contrôle technique, commune and NARSA

Three stops, in this order, and the morning goes faster.

The first is the technical inspection. A transfer needs a valid contrôle technique report, and the inspection centre will tell you whether the one the dealer holds is still acceptable. Read the remarks the inspector wrote about this particular car before you accept it.

The second is the commune. You and the seller sign the certificat de cession and both signatures are legalised there. The name on the original carte grise must match the seller's CIN, so check that before you pay anything. The third is NARSA, where the mutation puts the car in your name. Bring the original carte grise, the legalised certificat de cession, the inspection report, your CIN or carte de séjour and a proof of address. If the car is still financed, the lender's mainlevée is needed too. Ask the dealer for that on the first call. Check that the vignette is paid, and arrange insurance in your own name before you drive away. For deadlines and fees, ask NARSA or the tax service, since they change.
