A used BMW is priced by its series, its age and its kilometres, not by the showroom sheet. The X5 xDrive 45e is a plug-in hybrid: a petrol engine and a battery you can charge. Ask how the previous owner charged it and have the dealer show you the battery working as it should.

Who the Fes BMW suits: the family car, the commuter and the long run to Rabat or Meknes

Fes has narrow old streets and wide new roads. A mid-size SUV like the X3 copes with both, though parking in the medina edges is easier in a smaller car. • Ask for the full BMW service history and read the dates against the odometer. A gap of several years or a sudden jump in distance needs an explanation.
• Listen to the diesel on a cold start. A rattle, white smoke or a long delay before it fires should end the viewing.
• Drive it, and feel how the automatic gearbox shifts in traffic and at speed. It should change gear smoothly, without a shudder or a delay.
• On an xDrive car, check for noise or vibration when you turn the wheel hard at low speed.
• Look at the tyres. Uneven wear can point to alignment or suspension problems.
• Press every button: air conditioning, electric seats, the screen, parking sensors, the panoramic roof if fitted.
• Look for paint that does not match between panels and for uneven gaps, which suggest an accident repair.
• Check that the chassis number on the carte grise matches the one stamped on the car.

Documents, the commune and NARSA, step by step

Before you hand over any money, look at the original carte grise. The name on it must be the seller's, and it must match the seller's CIN. If the car was bought on credit, the lender must release it with a mainlevée.

Next come the contrôle technique report, which must be valid for a change of owner, and proof that the vignette is paid. You and the seller then sign a certificat de cession and have both signatures legalised at the commune or the arrondissement office. Do not leave either of those out.

The last stop is NARSA, where the car is put in your name. Bring your CIN or carte de séjour, proof of address, the original carte grise, the legalised cession and the inspection report. Deadlines and fees change, so ask NARSA directly instead of relying on a number you read online. Arrange insurance in your own name before you drive away, because you should not drive on the seller's policy.
